do y’all say “smith alums” out of sensitivity to transgender graduates–which i dig–or just sheer ignorance–which looks sloppy? if you’re making a point by it, say so. otherwise it looks like an absurd error.
You guessed right — we choose to say “alum” because we don’t want to make any assumptions about Smithies. Although since co-ed schools now consider “alumni” to be unisex, I s’pose we could pluralize that way too.
